Haematological and serum biochemical parameters are a valuable tool in determining the wellbeing status of different fish species and response in close association to various biological and environmental factors, therefore the aim of the present study was to establish sex-wise reference values of haemato-biochemical parameters of S. labiatus. The haematological parameters such as haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, total erythrocyte count (RBC), total leucocyte count (WBC), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and serum biochemical parameters such as glucose, cholesterol, urea, total protein, albumin and globulin were analysed. The results revealed that the haematological parameters, i.e., Hb, RBC, WBC and PCV showed significant (P < 0.05) differences with respect to sex. Significantly (P < 0.05) higher values of Hb content (11.18 g dl −1 ), RBC count (1.88 × 10 6 mm −3 ) and PCV (36.15%) were noted in male fish than females throughout the study period, while significantly (P < 0.05) higher WBC count was noted in females (20.38 × 10 3 mm −3 ) compared to males. However, no significant (P > 0.05) difference was observed in erythrocyte indices like MCH, MCHC and MCV between sexes. The serum biochemical parameters, i.e., glucose, cholesterol and urea, also showed significant (P < 0.05) difference between the sexes, but no significant (P > 0.05) difference was noticed in total protein, albumin and globulin. Significantly (P < 0.05) highest values of glucose (116.76 mg dl −1 ) and urea (9.01 mg dl −1 ) were recorded in male S. labiatus, while highest value of cholesterol (223.53 mg dl −1 ) was noted in females. The information generated in the present study gives the basic reference values of haematological and serum biochemical parameters of S. labiatus which will be useful in monitoring the wellbeing status of fish populations. Moreover, the data will also be helpful to ascertain the occurrence of different clinical and subclinical diseases, which may in turn help to boost the overall production of this species.

The aim of the present study is to compare the hematological parameters of two snow trout fish species, Schizopyge plagiostomus and Schizopyge niger, inhabiting two different habitats, to establish and compare baseline information about the hematological profile of the two species using standard methodology and light microscopy. Results showed significant (P < 0.05) differences in hematological parameters of the two species. Significantly higher hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell count (RBC) and hematocrit (Hct) values were recorded in S. plagiostomus as compared to S. niger. Conversely, the values of thrombocyte count (TC), white blood cell count (WBC) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were higher in S. niger in comparison to S. plagiostomus. The erythrocyte dimensions of these two species were distinguished and characterized under light microscopy; different morphometric characteristics were observed, such as larger size and smaller number in S. niger as compared to S. plagiostomus. The variation in hematological parameters and morphometric characteristics of erythrocytes between the two species inhabiting different environments might be due to their divergent physiological activity level, movement, metabolic rate and feeding behavior. This study will provide essential tools for physiologists and pathologists in monitoring the health status of these fish species in particular and fish species in general.

ABSTRACT. The aim of this study was to characterize the haematological profile of four Amazonian ornamental freshwater armoured catfish: acari-bola (Peckoltia oligospila -L06), acari-pleco (Cochliodon sp. -L145), acari-canoa (Lasiancistrus saetiger -L323) and acari-assacu (Pseudocanthicus spinosus -L160). The highest blood glucose levels (72.47 ± 28.7 mg dL ) were recorded for acari-canoa. The acari-bola and acari-pleco presented similar concentrations of total plasma protein (TPP) (7.96 ± 1.8 and 7.93 ± 1.8 g dL -1, respectively) against lower TPP concentrations observed in acari-canoa (4.87 ± 1.5 g dL -1) and acariassacu (6.55 ± 1.5 g dL -1). The acari-assacu had lower total haemoglobin concentration (5.88 ± 1.7 g dL -1) and haematocrit (12.66 ± 4.6%). No interspecific differences were observed in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The acari-pleco and acari-assacu presented the highest counts for neutrophils (4142.42 ± 3280.1 cel. μL ), respectively. The haematological profiles were similar to those reported in the literature for freshwater fish and the interspecific differences observed were discussed.
