Sex-related biochemical investigation of the diaptomid,Heliodiaptomus viduus Gurney (Crustacea: Copepoda)

Abstract: The freshwater diaptomid, Heliodiaptomus viduus was subjected to biochemical analysis to study its sex-related differences. Its chemical composition was similar to that of other copepods, the concentration of the components decreased in the order of protein> lipid> carbohydrate. The ovigerous females show higher dry weight and consequently the protein, lipid and carbohydrate concentrations are greater than non-ovigerous females and males. Jhe,re are also considerable qualitative and quantitative differences in… Show more

“…Biochemical studies have shown that zooplankton are rich in protein, lipid, essential amino acids and essential fatty acids which can provide the better augmented growth, immune stimu lation, pigment enhancement, and physiological regulations, it leads to better reproduction of brood-stock prawns and fishes (Watanabe, Kitajima, & Fu jita, 1983;Altaff & Chandran, 1989;Safiullah, 2001). The functional status of the digestive system of larval stages with regard to the digestibility of feed need to be assessed by the successful larval rearing of prawn and fish.…”

“…The reproductive system of female calanoid copepod species shows a generalized pattern of having a single median ovary, paired oviducts originating from antero-lateral part of the ovary which leads to the genital segment through the sides of the digestive tract and open into a single chamber, the genital antrum. Though such a generalized female reproductive system is reported in many calanoid species there is considerable species specific variations (Park, 1966;Marshall and Orr, 1972;Corkett and McLaren, 1978;Blades-Eckelbarger and Youngbluth, 1984;Razouls et al, 1986Razouls et al, , 1987Norrbin, 1994;Altaff, 2003Altaff, , 2020Dharani and Altaff, 2004a). The genital antrum has paired dorso-laterally directed pouches, the seminal receptacles in which spermatozoa are stored.…”

“…They mostly feed on unicellular plants and animals, small metazoans especially other crustaceans as well as organ debris. Planktonic copepods have high nutritive value because of their protein content (Altaff and Chandran, 1989) essential amino acids (Kraul et al, 1993) which greatly enhance their value as live feed in aquaculture. From the ecological point of view cladocera is a crucial group among zooplankton community.…”
