Individuals of Nysius huttoni White, a ground-dwelling hemipteran, develop one of three wing forms. Field studies were carried out from 1995 to 1998 to investigate the proportion of each wing form; adult populations consisted of 94.1% macropters, 5.5% sub-brachypters and 0.4% brachypters. Paired mating adults were collected for two years in 1995Á1996 and 1996Á1997 to investigate which wing forms were mating with which, and the proportions of the wing form combinations among the mating pairs. Theoretically, there are nine possible mating combinations among three wing forms. However, only six mating combinations were found in the field. Four mating combinations, M)M, àM) ßSb, ßM ) àSb and Sb)Sb occurred in both years; and two mating combinations, ßM ) àB and ßSb ) àB were found only in 1996Á1997. The other three mating combinations, àM) ßB, àSb) ßB and B)B were not found in either year. M )M was the predominant mating combination with an average percentage of 81.2%. The effects of temperature and photoperiod on wing development of this species were investigated at five constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30 and 3590.58C), one ambient (laboratory room conditions) temperature and three photoperiods (16-h, 12-h, and 8-h of light) in the laboratory. The results indicate that both low and high temperatures, and short day-length at lower temperature, tend to accelerate the production of sub-brachypters and brachypters, while high temperature under long photoperiod appears to favour the production of macropters. This ability to produce macropters possibly benefits this bug by enabling rapid dispersal of adults during occasional very dry summers (which may kill preferred weedy hosts) to temporary alternative crop hosts in Canterbury and Central Otago.

Stenocranus pacificus Kirkaldy (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is destructive pest on corn plants in South Lampung and it has been reported to cause corn damages in North Sumatra. The objective of this research was to study some aspects biology of S. pacificus on corn plants in screenhouse. The research was conducted by observing the biology of S. pacificus that was reared on corn plants in screenhouse. The results showed that life cycle of S. pacificus was 38–47 (41,60 ± 3,19) days: egg was 9–11 (10,20 ± 0,79) days, the first instar nymph was 3–4 (3,70 ± 0,48) days, the second instar nymph was 3–4 (3,90 ± 0,32) days, the third instar nymph was 3–4 (3,70 ± 0,48) days, the fourth instar nymph was 3–4 (3,80 ± 0,42) days, and the fifth instar nymph was 3–4 (3,60 ± 0,52) days. Age of female was 13–17 (15,30 ± 1,34) days. It was longer than age of male which was 8–12 (10,10 ± 1,20) days. Female could produce 181–214 (197,60 ± 11,64) eggs during its life. The sex ratio was 1:1,98.

In 2002 the New Zealand wheat bug Nysius huttoni White was observed for the first time in the Netherlands and Belgium. The introduction of N. huttoni to these regions presumably occurred via overseas transport of apple and kiwi fruits from New Zealand. Laboratory experiments showed that both eggs and adults of N. huttoni were capable of surviving cold conditions similar to those in overseas transportation. Specimens were sampled in Belgium and the Netherlands, and a DNA sequence analysis indicated a 100% similarity with N. huttoni material collected in Christchurch, New Zealand. The distribution of the lygaeid in Belgium in 2008 was studied based on a systematic sampling at 105 locations. The bug had been able to spread over most of the Belgian territory, with the exception of the most southern and eastern provinces. Given the poor flight capacity of Belgian N. huttoni populations, other methods of dispersal may be involved. N. huttoni occurred primarily in ruderal habitats, and its weedy host plants belong to very common plant families. Several observations support N. huttoni not being a threat for agricultural crops in Belgium under the present conditions of climate and soil usage.
