Abstract:The genus Leucothyreus has been linked to some commercial plant crop pests. Eventhough several species have been described for this genus, information about this group is still scarce. This study investigated some biological aspects and mating behavior in Leucothyreus albopilosus. Studies were conducted at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the municipalities of Aquidauana and Cassilândia, MS, Brazil. For biological studies, adults were collected with light traps from February 2011 to February 2012, and for behavior analyses from September to December 2014. Biological studies were undertaken every three days and included the eggs inspection, and the separation of the newly hatched larvae to observe and describe their developmental stages; to monitor larval growth and differentiate larval instars, we measured the larvae cephalic capsule. Life cycle was determined starting from the newly laid eggs until adult death. For mating behavior studies, adults obtained with light traps were taken to the laboratory. As soon as they started flying in the evening, couples were formed and copulation steps were recorded. in the field, we observed that adults were mostly collected during warmer and wetter periods (from August to March). Our results showed that the embryonic period of L. albopilosus lasted 20.5 days, the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd instars lasted 31.0, 33.1 and 85.6 days, respectively. The pupal stage lasted 20 days, and the egg to adult period was completed in 185.5 days; these results suggest that L. albopilosus can be characterized as a univoltine species. Observations of mating behavior in the laboratory showed that, after the sunset, adults projected a small portion of clypeus near the soil surface and flew off seeking a female to mate. The female could accept or reject the male for mating. When the female accepted the male, copulation occurred from 19:00 to 23:00 hours, and lasted 19.45 minutes on average. Sometimes females refused to mate, probably because the male or female were not sexually mature to perform copulation, and there might be a chemical communication between the adults. Adults were observed feeding on ripe bananas (Musa sp., Musaceae) and on mangaba flowers (Hancornia speciosa, Apocynaceae) in the laboratory. With this work we contributed with the description of mating behavior in the genus Leucothyreus and concluded that the biological cycle was completed in less than 200 days. Rev. Biol. Resumo. O gênero Cyclocephala possui grande quantidade de espécies distribuídas nas várias regiões do Brasil, entretanto, poucos são os estudos relacionados ao comportamento de cópula, assim o presente trabalho teve como objetivo estudar o comportamento de cópula de Cyclocephala verticalis Burmeister. Com uma armadilha luminosa instalada ao lado de área de pastagens, foram realizadas coletas de adultos de agosto a setembro de 2013. Em laboratório machos e fêmeas foram mantidos em recipientes separados e ao anoitecer, foram formados casais para observações das etapas que envolvem o comportamento de cópula. De 28 de outubro a 4 de novembro de 2013, para determinar o horário de voo, recolheu-se os insetos coletados na armadilha luminosa a cada 60 min, iniciando os estudos as 18:00 h e encerrando as observações as 6:00 h do dia seguinte. Ao saírem do solo os adultos realizaram ativamente o voo, em seguida pousaram, e o macho ao localizar a fêmea, se aproxima e a toca com o primeiro par de pernas e antenas. Se a fêmea aceita o macho, ocorre à cópula a qual durou 12,5 + 1,3 min em média, e ocorreu entre 19:00 h e 02:00 h. Em algumas ocasiões as fêmeas não aceitaram os machos para a cópula, indicando que os estes provavelmente não estavam aptos a se reproduzirem, ou a própria fêmea não estava apta a se reproduzir, havendo nesse momento reconhecimento químico entre os adultos para a formação do casal. The mating season of the oriental beetle, Exomala orientalis (Waterhouse), in 1994 and 1995 at Bethpage State Park, Farmingdale, NY (40Њ 45Ј N, 73Њ 28Ј W) began in the middle of June, peaked in the 1st wk of July, and ended in the middle of August. There were differences in the emergence schedule among fairways as well as local differences between roughs and fairway. Both sexes were most active around sunset on shorter-cut turf (i.e., fairways, greens, and tees, versus roughs), and the few individuals seen during the daylight hours were mostly males. These males were generally found perched on vegetation at the border of the fairway. Feeding was not observed, except on ßowers by females devoid of mature eggs. This study conÞrms our observations on the pattern of activity in an earlier study conducted with the use of synthetic pheromone traps. It also explains the difÞculty encountered by earlier workers in Þnding adults of this insect in the Þeld. Implications of the above Þndings on the management of the oriental beetle are discussed.
