There is a large individual deviation for men, which may be caused by a difference in personality characteristics, in sexual interest in response to sexual stimuli. In this study, we investigate whether attention to the sexual region in a video depends on the personality characteristics of men, assessing this with an eye-tracking system. The study included 30 healthy males with a normal psychological state, who viewed a sexual video in which the sexual region had been designated. Visual attention was measured across the designated region according to gaze duration. Ten types of personality characteristics were evaluated as a T-score by a questionnaire. By Pearson's correlation coefficient, the relations between gaze duration at the sexual region and T-scores of paranoia, psychasthenia and social introversion were found to be statistically significant. By multivariate stepwise regression analysis, only social introversion was negatively associated with the sexual region. Even normal variation of personality characteristics can affect the viewing period of the sexual region. This is the first report showing that subjects with a high degree of paranoia, psychasthenia and particularly social introversion have a tendency to view the sexual region for a shorter duration.

In humans, the sexual cyclicity of estrus that occurs in animals is not present, and sexuality is sometimes evoked by the imagination. The central site of the libido has long been unclear. We analyzed the site of the libido in healthy male volunteers with the aid of the RigiScan plus™, which can evaluate the erectile state in real time. By evaluating the erectile phenomenon in real time, we could confirm that sexual stimulation was fully transmitted and could identify the phases of sexual activity. In the excitement phase, the occipital lobe is the area specifically activated as indicated by positron emission tomography. We also found that in addition to this area, part of the cerebellar vermis was specifically activated. During the plateau phase, the occipital lobe, which contains the visual cortex, and the temporal lobe, which contains the auditory cortex, became more highly activated than during the excitement phase, and in addition, the ventral striatum (putamen) was specifically activated. Although these findings are interesting and important in the field of sexual medicine, it is supposed that the subjects show interest in sexually stimulating videos and watch them in many imaging analyses of the site of the libido. Regarding sexual interest, we reported that a sex difference existed in visual attention to a sexual video by an eye-tracking system.We also showed that attention to the sexual region in the video depends on the personality characteristics of men.Here, we show recent evidence of sexual libido and interest including our experimental results.

Over the past 30 years, within forensic contexts there has been increasing interest in the use of assessments based on behavioural and implicit assessment processes. Eye‐tracking, the ability to identify and track where an individual is looking, has increasingly been used to infer underlying cognitive processes related to observed behaviour. Within forensic contexts, the ability to monitor where an individual is looking, and by implication what they are interested in, is increasingly being seen as one potential way to gain objective information about offender cognitions. Eye‐tracking has been used to study general factors related to sexual interest within non‐offending samples and is increasingly being used to assess inappropriate or deviant sexual interest in offending populations. This chapter overviews the concept of eye‐tracking as a methodology, describes a number of different areas where it has been used, and then discusses in more detail how eye‐tracking is currently being used to assess normal and deviant sexual interest.
