Sex Differences in Lipid Profile across the Life Span in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Primary Care-Based Study

Abstract: We assessed sex differences across the life span in the lipid profile of type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients treated and not treated with statins. We used the Groningen Initiative to ANalyze Type 2 diabetes Treatment database, which includes T2D patients from the north of the Netherlands. Patients with a full lipid profile determined between 2010 and 2012 were included. We excluded patients treated with other lipid-lowering drugs than statins. Sex differences in low- and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c … Show more

“… 39 Intriguingly, we observed a U-shaped relationship between total cholesterol and breast cancer risk in both the primary and sensitivity analyses, notably for women aged ≥65 years, but unexpectedly for women with a BMI <30 kg/m 2 . Given that total cholesterol increases around age 50 years in women, 21 , 22 we further adjusted the models with age as a continuous variable, and the observed associations remained.…”

“… 13 , 15–20 Inconsistent results in the literature possibly result from the use of different age groups, producing inconsistent changes relative to age. 21 , 22 Intriguingly, diabetes per se could also complicate this relationship by inducing quantitative and qualitative changes in serum lipids and lipoproteins. 23–25 Although dyslipidaemia is routinely measured in patients with T2DM, 26 this has been the focus of only one study to our knowledge.…”

“…Xuewen Wang et al suggested that the network of hormone action might be an important regulator of lipid metabolism [ 24 ]. Martina Ambrož et al suggested that there were significant differences in the lipid profile of type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients between males and females across their lifespan [ 26 ]. However, the lipid profile between males and females in the IPAH patients compared with healthy controls needs further study.…”

“…Since women with T2D had higher LDL-c and HDL-c levels and lower triglyceride (TG) levels than men with T2D, gender variations in the lipid profile are probably a factor in this [77] .However, it is unclear if these disparities exist across all age groups and whether menopausal state has an impact on them. Given that postmenopausal diabetes women have an atherogenic lipid and pro-inflammatory profile that is higher than that of premenopausal non-diabetic or diabetic women, this is most likely the case [78].…”
