Background: Our study aimed to assess the differences between domestic and international students in terms of social support, vital exhaustion, and depression during the period of COVID-19 and to examine the relationships and potential effects of these factors on each other. Methods: The online cross-sectional survey was conducted via Google Forms® at three time intervals during the pandemic. Results: Here, 1320, 246, and 139 students completed our questionnaires in the different time intervals. The international students reported significantly lower values in terms of perceived social support. Concerning depression, the international female students reported higher values than the domestic female students. Significant correlations were found in both samples between vital exhaustion and depression, as well as between perceived social support and depression. Conclusion: In this study, the international students reported lower levels of perceived social support and higher levels of depression, particularly among females. The correlations between depression, social support, and vital exhaustion might highlight protective and risk factors. These findings emphasize the importance of addressing social support and mental health among university students, especially among international students who have a difficult time finding social support during times of stress, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aim: To determine gender differences in the relationship between depression and self-rated health and awareness of measures for cardiovascular prevention in an open population of 25-4 years in Russia/Siberia (Novosibirsk). Methods: Under the screening based on the budgetary theme No. AAAA-A17-117112850280-2, a random representative sample of the male and female population who were residents in one of the districts in Novosibirsk was examined in 2013-2016 (n=975, 43.8% males, mean age 34.5±0.4 years). Selfassessment of health and awareness of preventive measures was assessed using the questionnaire "Knowledge and attitude to own health". Depression was assessed using the depression scale based on the adapted MMPI questionnaire. Results: There was a linear increase in the proportion of those who considered themselves "not entirely healthy" or "sick" with an increase in the level of depression in 25-34 and 35-44 years age groups of studied population. Women aged 35-44 years with a moderate level of depression are 15-20% more likely than men to report that they are “not entirely healthy” and “sick” and have health complaints (p <0.05). Men aged 25-34y with major depression were more likely to report negative self-esteem and health complaints but these differences were not statistically significant. In both age groups, with an increase in the level of depression by 20-40%, the proportion of people who “clearly did not take care of their health” among men and women increased. However, the presence of depression eliminate statistical gender differences. In the presence of depression, women are 16% more likely than men to consider it highly likely to develop a serious illness in the next 5-10 years, while they are 10% less likely to have regular health checks. Women were 4-12% more likely than men to doubt the possibilities of preventive medicine, regardless of the level of depression. Conclusions: As depression rises, self-rated health falls and confidence in the effectiveness of preventive measures among both sexes decreases. And while women are more likely to report pessimistic responses to health and prevention, the presence of high levels of depression deletes gender differences.

В статье рассматриваются гендерные различия в уровне тревожности и депрессии, вызванных пандемией COVID-19. Эмпирической основой исследования служат панельные данные международного опроса «Ценности в кризисе» по России, собранные в июне 2020 г., апреле — мае 2021 г. и ноябре — декабре 2021 г. Исследование показало, что женщины во время пандемии были более склонны переживать тревожность и депрессию, чем мужчины, что соответствует тренду, наблюдающемуся во многих странах. Динамика в этих различиях между тремя волнами не обнаружена. Отсутствие динамики, как и интерактивного эффекта между полом и факторами, связанными с пандемией (перенесение симптомов COVID-19 самим человеком или его близкими, потеря работы, необходимость сидеть с детьми и др.), может объясняться тем, что гендерные различия в ментальном здоровье россиян не являются следствием самой пандемии, а существовали до нее. При этом влияющие на тревожность и депрессию факторы у мужчин и женщин несколько различаются. Потеря работы повышает тревожность только у мужчин. Переход на неполный рабочий день увеличивает тревожность и депрессию и у мужчин, и у женщин, но в большей степени у женщин. Возраст понижает уровень тревожности у женщин и уровень депрессии в обеих подвыборках. Исследование подтверждает необходимость учитывать гендерные различия в ментальном здоровье для разработки эффективных мер социальной политики в кризисных ситуациях. Благодарность.
