M any small colleges have only one organic chemistry sequence that serves all students. This means that only a small number of the students in these courses are actually chemistry majors. Many of the nonchemistry majors question why they need to learn organic chemistry. Trivia questions and stories can be used to show that organic chemistry is everywhere in their lives. In particular, questions can be designed to pique the interest of pre-med, pre-pharm, and biology students. Also, questions can show students how little they know about the chemistry in their everyday lives. Typically, these questions are posed to the class and they guess at the answers. Afterward, the answers are discussed and extra details are provided.
