Sex and β-Endorphin Influence the Effects of Ethanol on Limbic Gabra2 Expression in a Mouse Binge Drinking Model

Abstract: Binge drinking is a widespread problem linked to increased risk for alcohol-related complications, including development of alcohol use disorders. In the last decade, binge drinking has increased significantly, specifically in women. Clinically, sexually dimorphic effects of alcohol are well-characterized, however, the underlying mechanisms for these dimorphisms in the physiological and behavioral effects of alcohol are poorly understood. Among its many effects, alcohol consumption reduces anxiety via the inhi… Show more

“…Alternatively, sex differences in other neurotransmitter or neuromodulatory systems could interact with the Gabra2 Genotype in determining the methamphetamine behavioral response. For example, sex‐dependent interactions of endogenous opioid function and alcohol drinking on Gabra2 expression in mice have been reported 74 …”

“…3,4 Deficits in the endogenous peptide β-endorphin may affect alcohol consumption in humans and animals. 5,6 The melanocortin family may be an important regulator of the rewarding component in the addiction process. Substance P is crucial for the neurochemical response to stress-induced situations.…”
