Sex and Race Effects on Risk for Selected Outcomes among Elderly HIV-Infected Patients

Abstract: The HIV-infected population in the United States is aging. A retrospective study of 132 patients (26 women, 106 men) ≥59 years of age was undertaken to evaluate the effect of race and sex on selected outcomes. With the exception of women being more likely to have diagnosis of depression compared with men, sex had little influence on risk for other conditions among elderly patients with HIV. In contrast, African American race was significantly associated with the risk for several selected disorders and outcomes… Show more

“…Sixty-three studies reported HCV infection prevalence [63-65, 69, 72, 73, 75, 77, 79-84, 88, 90, 102-104, 107, 109, 110, 114, 117-119, 123, 127, 133, 140-173]. We calculated sPrev for HCV-exposed, defined in 69% of individual studies as positive by HCV antibody test, and for chronic HCV infection, defined in 80% of studies as positive by HCV antibody and HCV RNA tests (see Supplemental Table S6 for all definitions).…”

“…Twenty-six publications reported HBV infection prevalence [63, 65, 69, 71, 79-81, 89, 102, 106, 110, 123, 141, 144, 147, 150, 151, 154, 157, 159, 162, 165, 170, 172, 174, 175]. HBV infection was defined in 72% of individual studies as positive by HBV surface antigen test (see Supplemental Table S7 for all definitions).…”

“…Mental health concerns, particularly depression, anxiety, and substance misuse, are common among older PWH. Rates of depression greater than 50% have been identified in numerous studies, including ROAH (Brennan, Karpiak, & Cantor, 2009;Frontini et al, 2012;Justice et al, 2004). In ROAH 2.0, 62% reported feeling depressed during the past year (Erenrich et al 2018).…”

“…found that older sexual minority men with HIV more likely to have a history of substance use disorders, alcoholism, and depression compared with HIV-negative peers. Commonly used illicit substances among older PWH include marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamines (Erenrich et al, 2018;Frontini et al, 2012). Anxiety is a serious and prevalent mental health issue among older PWH; in ROAH 2.0, 65% of participants experienced anxiety in the past year (Erenrich et al, 2018).…”

“…In the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, the incidence rate ratio of diabetes was higher in subjects who were male, of older age, obese, of Asian or black ethnicity, and currently treated with NRTI-or PI-containing regimens [26]. Frontini et al [27] reported that the risk of diabetes was higher among elderly HIV-infected African-Americans as compared to a predominantly Caucasian population (24.1 % vs. 12.2 %, p < 0.01) [27]. Adeyemi et al [28] demonstrated that there was a higher rate of insulin resistance defined by HOMA-IR among Hispanic women after adjustment for age, BMI, hepatitis C infection, and protease inhibitor use in the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS), a prospective US cohort that is predominantly African-American and Hispanic.…”
