The need for re li able age de ter mi na tion of mam mals has stim u lated the de vel op ment of a num ber of dif fer ent meth ods (Mor ris 1972). The in flu en tial ce men tum annuli count ing method has been ap plied to most un gu late spe cies eg moose Alces alces (Ser geant and Pimlott 1959), fal low deer Dama dama (Moore et al. 1995), rein deer Rangifer tarandus (Reimers and Nordby 1968) and roe deer Capreolus capreolus (Aitken 1975). Acta Theriologica 51: 205-214.A novel, sim ple, and ob jec tive method is pre sented for age ing roe deer Capreolus capreolus (Linnaeus, 1758) eval u ated on 471 lower jaws from roe deer of known age (351 with per ma nent pre mol ars). It is based on tooth erup tion pat terns and pres ence/ab sence of wear char ac ters in jaws from roe deer in te grated in a scor ing sys tem. Per ma nent cheek teeth emerge in May-July in the year af ter birth, which en ables pre cise age de ter mi na tion of in di vid u als with de cid u ous pre mol ars. For in di vid u als with per ma nent cheek teeth, the method pro vides the cor rect age for all in di vid u als youn ger than 13 months and > 80% of all in di vid u als be tween 13 and 24 months old. For older in di vid u als the ac cu racy de creases, but de cent ac cu racy is achieved to the age of 48 months. Males have higher wear rates than fe males cor rob o rat ing re cent doc u men ta tion of sex-spe cific life his tory tac tics in ungulates. Knowing the age of individuals is crucial for almost any analysis of population dynamics, evolution, palaeontology, management and conservation. The aim of this study was to provide the practitioner with a practical and cost‐effective method to estimate the age of large numbers of red deer samples. Using 694 mandibles of Scottish red deer of known age, we compared the bias and precision of five of the most widely used methods for estimating the age of red deer based on tooth characters. Two methods based on reference collections of photographs representing different stages of tooth wear, two methods describing the traits that characterise different classes of the tooth wear and age, and one method based on counting the cementum layers of the radicular pad of the first permanent molar, were used. We also described 13 age classes up to 38 months of age based on different stages of eruption of lower molar teeth. We applied a sequential stepwise‐like selection procedure in conjunction with cross‐validated predictions using the prediction error sum of squares statistic, with the aim of reducing the large number of traits that the two methods based on tooth wear trait descriptions require to estimate age. We were able to reduce the number of traits by 70% and still gain precision and reduce bias in the predictions, which indicated that the equations provided by these two methods overfitted the age of our reference samples. The cementum layers method was the most precise and least biased of all the methods, followed by Dudley's method. We provide the practitioner with recommendations to allow estimation of the ages of Scottish red deer, together with comprehensive graphic material to facilitate the use of the different methods.

Neurocranial expansion and mastication are commonly implicated as the two major biomechanical factors affecting suture morphology. In deer the antlers provide an additional source of biomechanical stress acting on the skull. Equivalent stresses are not found in females, who lack antlers. We analyzed the complexity and interdigitation of the interfrontal and coronal sutures that surround the antler-bearing frontal bones of (n = 67) white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to 1) evaluate changes in suture morphology throughout ontogeny, and 2) test the hypothesis that male deer have more complex sutures than females. Two methods were used to quantify suture morphology: fractal analysis and length-ratios (actual suture length divided by direct straightline length). Both techniques produced similar results, although the two methods cannot be considered equivalent. Suture complexity increases markedly throughout ontogeny, but appears to level off after animals have reached adulthood. Cranial size in males, but not females, continues to increase in adults. No significant increase in suture complexity with age in the adult cohort was detected. While deer are highly dimorphic in size and the presence of antlers, no significant differences existed between males and females for any measure of suture complexity. No consistent patterns emerged between suture complexity and skull size or antler characteristics. The presence of antlers appears to have a minimal effect on suture complexity in white-tailed deer. Factors that may contribute to the lack of dimorphism in suture complexity are discussed.
