Severity of age-related hearing loss is associated with impaired activities of daily living

Abstract: functional status as measured by a common ADL scale is diminished in older hearing impaired adults. Our findings suggest that severely diminished hearing could make the difference between independence and the need for formal support services or placement.

“…In particular, when communication difficulties cause discomfort and frustration, they can prompt withdrawal or avoidance of social situations, and can severely limit the range of activities that are available to older adults (LaplanteLévesque, Hickson, & Worrall, 2010;Smith & Kampfe, 1997). This can ultimately lead to a less active and satisfying lifestyle and possibly depression (Arlinger, 2003;Cacciatore et al, 1999;Gopinath et al, 2012;Pronk et al, 2011).…”

“…The most commonly reported activity limitation in adults with hearing impairment is communication difficulty (Gopinath et al, 2012;Helvik, Jacobsen, & Hallberg, 2006), especially the ability to communicate with others . Adults with hearing impairment experience difficulty discriminating and extracting speech stimuli in the presence of competing background noise (Gordon-Salant, 2006;Helvik, Jacobsen, & Hallberg, 2006;Olsen, 2012).…”

“…Research also indicates that sedentary behavior is independently associated with numerous health outcomes (Owen et al, 2010). Taken together, it is important to examine the association between sedentary behavior and hearing function among older adults, as these individuals are at the greatest risk of hearing impairment (Gopinath et al, 2012). As a result, the aim of this study was to examine the association between sedentary behavior and hearing sensitivity among a national sample of older US adults.…”
