Severity assessment of acute pancreatitis using four prognostic factors – a nationwide multicenter study of 3682 cases in Japan

Abstract: read with great interest the article by Ikeura et al.1 assessing the efficacy of the prognostic factor score in the Japanese severity criteria for acute pancreatitis (AP). By analyzing 1159 patients with severe AP, they showed that the area under the curve (AUC) for the receiver-operating characteristic curve of the prognostic factor score for predicting AP-related mortality was 0.78, which was comparable to that for the wellknown acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II score (AUC ¼ 0.80).
