Severe Iron Deficiency Anemia in 42 Pediatric Patients

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the clinical and laboratory features of children with severe iron deficiency anemia. The authors retrospectively reviewed the charts of 198 children with iron deficiency anemia to ascertain cases of severe iron deficiency anemia. Forty-two children with severe iron deficient anemia were evaluated. The median age was 21 months (range, 7-240 months) at diagnosis and 27 children were 13-24 months of age. For 35 children the major source of calories was derived from cow… Show more

“…: red meats) and the high intake of cows milk were associated with ID. 25,26 Although there are no nutritional surveys in this study, we may infer that the diet of the analyzed population is not as required, especially because of the high prevalence of VAD observed. 3 With regard to VAD, the most probable hypothesis to explain such prevalence in the analyzed population is that children of this age have a low intake of vitamin-A-rich foods, as observed in other populations with VAD.…”

“…Most patients with iron deficiency will have normal or elevated platelet counts, some higher than 1,000 × 10 9 /L at diagnosis [3]; thrombocytopenia in association with iron deficiency is relatively rare. In a case series of 42 children with severe iron deficiency anemia, only 1 patient (2.4%) had a platelet count less than 100 × 10 9 /L [4]. Similarly, only 2 of 86 (2.3%) adult women with iron deficiency anemia had thrombocytopenia [5].…”

“…Despite some improvement during the past several decades, children in the second year of life are the most vulnerable to severe iron deficiency anemia. 29 A recent National Health and Nutrition Examination Study estimated that 2% of children in their second year of life had iron deficiency anemia, whereas 7% were iron deficient. 30 High-risk populations, such as the poor and minorities, have shown much greater rates of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in this age group.…”
