Severe Hypermagnesemia

Abstract: Hypermagnesemia occurs with serum magnesium concentration >3.6 mg/dL. The most common causes of magnesium toxicity are parenteral administration, massive oral ingestion, colonic enemas, generally in the setting of renal insufficiency, as magnesium is renally excreted. Serum magnesium levels greater than 3.6 mg/dL can be symptomatic, leading to cardiovascular and respiratory depression.
