Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2): a Systemic Infection

Abstract: To date, seven identified coronaviruses (CoVs) have been found to infect humans; of these, three highly pathogenic variants have emerged in the 21st century. The newest member of this group, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was first detected at the end of 2019 in Hubei province, China.

“… 58 The disease pathophysiology can also involve the development of severe macro- and micro-vascular disorders, which result in a systemic hypercoagulable state and severe vascular injury, leading to thrombosis. 27 , 59 This can either be due to immune dysregulation and a cytokine storm or the high expression of ACE2 in endothelial tissue (the site of entry for SARS-CoV-2). 60 The combination of these disease manifestations will lead to a ventilation/perfusion mismatch and severe dyspnea.…”
