Severe acute cellulitis and sepsis caused by Aeromonas spp. in a dog on immunosuppressive therapy

Abstract: Objective To describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic investigation, and medical management of a dog on immunosuppressive therapy that developed a severe soft tissue infection attributed to Aeromonas hydrophila/caviae. Case summary A 5‐year‐old female neutered Border Collie dog was presented for investigation of a rapidly growing skin lesion. The dog had been diagnosed with immune‐mediated thrombocytopenia and was receiving immunosuppressive therapy for 5 weeks. Physical examination at initial presentati… Show more

“…We propose that this dog developed an opportunistic infection secondary to immunosuppression from prednisone and oclacitinib. Immunosuppression has been linked to the development of opportunistic infections in both veterinary and human medicine ( 5 , 11 , 12 , 14 , 15 ). One other case report describes a dog that developed septic pericarditis with C. albicans and Acinetobacter 39 days following treatment initiation for immune-mediated hemolytic anemia with prednisolone and azathioprine ( 5 ).…”

“…Aeromonas were isolated following outbreaks in rabbit farms as well as recovered from the feces of dogs, cats, and horses [145][146][147][148]. Several publications described Aeromonas as a pathogen of echinoderms, mollusks, and crocodiles and associated with copepods [34,44,149,150].…”
