Seven days triple therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori does not alter the disease activity of patients with inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: Background/AimsThe influences of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy on the disease course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are still unclear. We therefore conducted a multicenter, retrospective cohort study to evaluate the safety of H. pylori eradication therapy for IBD patients.MethodsIBD patients with H. pylori eradication from 2005 to 2015 (eradication group) and control patients (non-eradication group; 2 paired IBD patients without H. pylori eradication matched with each eradicated patient) were in… Show more

“…A multicenter retrospective cohort study showed that H. pylori eradication did not worsen IBD activity. [ 11 ] However, there have been no reports involving pediatric patients with IBD. We report a pediatric patient with worsened UC activity following the eradication of H. pylori.…”

“…Moreover, the severity of IBD, UC in particular, increased after H. pylori eradication [54]. The same information was provided by Shinzaki S et al, who found an improvement of IBD condition only in subjects who did not undergo eradication therapy [55]. The IBD phenotype-modifying capabilities of H. pylori were shown in studies demonstrating that fibro-stenotic and fistulizing CD as well as risk of bowel resections and number of relapses were significantly lower in H. pylori-infected subjects [48].…”

“…In addition, the authors mentioned that careful observation after eradication therapy is necessary, especially for patients with active IBD who underwent eradication therapy”. 34 Systemic combined amoxicillin and metronidazole reduced the local inflammatory load and OPG levels in patients with localized periodontitis. 35 Thus, this study investigated the effect of sequential H. pylori eradication therapy on serum OPG levels in patients with H. pylori infection and co-existing inflammatory bowel disease.…”
