Setting Free the Bear: The Challenges and Lessons of the Ursa A-10 Deepwater Extended-Reach Well

Abstract: Summary This paper details the case history of the highly challenging extended-reach deepwater A-10 well, drilled in the Ursa (“Bear” in Latin) prospect in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). This 30,000-ft well, drilled from the Ursa tension-leg platform (TLP) at a vertical depth of 18,000 ft and a horizontal displacement (HD) of 20,000 ft, targeted the Yellow sand in the Ursa-Princess section of the greater Mars-Ursa basin. During the drilling of the original hole (OH), two subsequent sidetracks, and tw… Show more

“…Using the same mud density in these zones as in the remainder of the well will result in an increased overbalance. Lost circulation into the depleted reservoir will increase as the overbalance rises [10]. The circulation losses in some wells, which are drilled in depleted reservoirs, are about thousands of barrels [11].…”

“…On the contrary, a slight downward trend in V total oil is found when P b goes upward from 1 MPa to 3 MPa. It is also worth mentioning that the absolute permeability k has no influence on V total oil due to the reason that this property has no correlation with Equation (8).…”

“…With regard to deep-water oil and gas field development, in 2002, the A-10 deep-water ERW was drilled in the Ursa Oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico basin, with a vertical depth of 5486 m and a horizontal displacement of 6096 m. The well was drilled from the Ursa tension leg platform (TLP) to the yellow sand reservoir in the Ursa Prince section of the Mars Ursa basin [8]. Brazil had drilled 47 ERWs in the Peregrino Oilfield from 2010 to 2017, with an average horizontal displacement of 1419 m [9].…”

“…In 2013 Vestavik [30] proposed the use of double-wall drill pipe drilling technology to increase the borehole extension limit. In 2014, Gradishar [31] pointed out the influence of various factors on the extension limit of drilling through the drilling history of an offshore extended-reach well. In 2018, Xin Li [32] proposed an optimal design principle and control method for the subjective and objective constraints of the bare-hole extension limit for large displacement horizontal wells with the goal of improving the bare-hole extension limit.…”
