SET Protein in Cancer: A Potential Therapeutic Target

Abstract: : SET protein is a multi-functional oncoprotein that is ubiquitously expressed in most tumor cells. Dysregulation of SET has been associated with many types of cancer. Due to ever-accumulating evidence of its strong correlation with both poor prognosis and drug resistance, the targeting of SET is starting to be explored. SET is currently regarded as a potential target for cancer therapy, and several inhibitors are being developed for clinical trials. In this review, the physiological and pathological functions… Show more

“…In particular, it was found that GAPDH had important effects on cell cycle and DNA replication. Previous studies have identified GAPDH as a binding protein of oncoprotein SET, a cyclin B1 binding protein that has been shown to promote cancer initiation and progression [53] , [54] . GAPDH depletion in lung cancer cells (A549) was able to inhibit glycolysis and impede the cell cycle through a 5'-AMP activated protein kinase-mediated pathway [55] .…”

“…SET is a multi-functional protein that modulates various cell signaling pathways including nucleosome assembly and histone binding, and it has existed in many types of human tissues, especially the lung (Liang et al, 2021). SET protein has multiple functions, and oxidative stress and inflammatory activities may also lead to abnormal SET gene expression (Feng et al, 2017).…”
