Set-based design: a review and new directions

Abstract: Set-based design (SBD), sometimes referred to as set-based concurrent engineering (SBCE), has emerged as an important component of lean product development (LPD) with all researchers describing it as a core enabler of LPD. Research has explored the principles underlying LPD and SBCE, but methodologies for the practical implementation need to be better understood. A review of SBD is performed in this article in order to discover and analyse the key aspects to consider when developing a model and methodo… Show more

“…There is evidence of four comprehensive SBD related literature surveys in the recent past (2014 to present). Each of these studies addressed the topic from a specific perspective: (1) Reducing Design Rework using SBD in a Model Centric Environment, 27 (2) Set‐Based Thinking in the Engineering Design Community and Beyond, 23 (3) Exploring the Role of SBD in Trade‐Off Analytics, 63 4) SBD: a review and new directions, 64 and 5) SBD: the state‐of‐practice and research opportunities 65 . The focus of the first paper was on SBD procedural guidance, knowledge‐based engineering for SBD, and model centric environments for SBD.…”

“…New methods based on deliberative active inference can be related to established constructs from organizational studies, for example, organizational lifecycles [26] and organizational design [27]. New methods based on deliberative active inference can be related to established organizational practice in business model design [16] and set-based design [28].…”

“…Similar in organizational practice is set-based design. This is an approach to design that involves being open to multiple design options simultaneously, rather than successively criticizing and modifying a single design option [28]. However, set-based design is focused on product development and business model design can be focused on reinforcement.…”

“…Subsequently, SBD methods have been employed in a wide array of fields (Raudberget, 2010;Doerry and Koenig, 2019;Parrish, Wong, Tommelein, and Stojadinovic, 2007). The recent paper by Toche (Toche, Pellerin, and Fortin, 2020) provides an extensive review of this work. It concludes that few complete examples of SBD employed to design large complex systems have been documented.…”
