Session-based Search Behavior in Naturalistic Settings for Learning-related Tasks

Abstract: In this research, we investigate the behavioral patterns exhibited in different search sessions as users attempt to complete search tasks of increasing cognitive complexity. The search tasks, which are exploratory in nature, have been designed using the Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, and are presented to the users hierarchically. We capture naturalistic search behavior of the users in real world (non-lab) setting using a Chrome browser plugin. The research analyzes the web log data of the users to assess … Show more

“…To better understand search as a learning process, researchers consider conceptualising learning as contexts or scenarios for searching, and accordingly they designed learning-related tasks [21][22][23]. Learning-related task emphasises search behaviours that are conducted to complete a work task with a/some learning goal(s).…”

“…They found the number of users' downloads are correlated across different search sessions, and the time gap until the next download session is negatively correlated with the number of queries. In addition, some studies regarding learning-related search focused on the relationship between users' interactions with learning outcomes or knowledge gain [21,33,34].…”

“…Most of the studies belong to the latter category. These studies do not explicitly use the word ‘learning’, although implicitly they deal with this phenomenon.” Further, according to Reynolds et al (2018), searching and learning are not isolated but co‐occurring events, and the learning outcomes are often influenced by the cognitive complexity of the search tasks (Krathwohl, 2002), the choice of information sources (Rath et al, 2018), the affordances offered by search devices (chatbots, personal assistants), and the environment (Ghosh and Shah, 2019). The searchers’ topic knowledge, topic interest, and perceived task difficulty also affect the behavioral patterns and learning goals.…”
