Session 12 Electron tubes — Fast wave devices

Abstract

Emerging requirements for extreme high power at high frequencies has generated further interest in fast wave interaction devices. These devices are characterized by circuit dimensions that are large compared to a wavelength which enhances both their high power and high frequency capabilities.This session deals with various types of fast wave devices. Papers are presented on both gyrotron oscillators and gyro-TWT amplifiers. Data on high power gyrotron show efficiencies approaching 50% in the lower millimeter frequency range (28-35 GHz). Gyro-TWT results are presented which reveal both high gain and high efficiency (>25%) performance.Other novel devices presented includeatheoretical analysisof acircuitlesselectron beam amplifier that has attractive features for wide band mm wave amplification. The theory of a competing fast wave device known as the Peniotron, which requires less magnetic field than a comparable gyrotron, is also presented. The final papers of this session discusses an electrostatic deflection modulation system for a high gain gyrocon amplifier. This system eliminates the bulky magnet presently required in existing gyrocon designs.
