Sesquiterpenoids from the rhizomes of Curcuma aeruginosa

Abstract: Six sesquiterpenoids were isolated from a methanol extract of Curcuma aeruginosa rhizomes by using various chromatographic separations. Their structures were elucidated as pyrocurzerenone (1), dehydrochromolaenin (2), curzeone (3), linderazulene (4), curzerenone (5), and 8,12-epoxy-1(10),4(15),7,11-germacratetraen-6-one (6) by extensive NMR spectroscopic analysis as well as comparison with the reported data. This is the first report of isolation of compounds 1, 2, 4, and 6 from C. aeruginosa.

“…42 Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UEA) can also be used as an alternative to maceration. 43 The mechanical effect of the UEA method increases the surface contact between the permeability of the sample cell wall and the solvent thereby affecting the release of the compound and increasing the mass transport of the solvent into the plant cell so that the extraction time and amount can be reduced. 41 After macerated, Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb rhizome extract was further separated by chromatography before the compounds were identified (Table 2).…”

“…Purification of the D1D2 fraction chromatography with the hot phase of Methanol: water (4:1), followed by n-hexane: ethyl acetate (50:1). 43 In all the articles that discussed the isolation of compounds from the rhizome of Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb, sesquiterpenes are the compounds that can most often be isolated and identified. However, other studies have succeeded in isolating compounds other than sesquiterpenes.…”

“…Giang et al [54] isolated aeruginolactone (17) and aeruginone (18) (23) and one known compound, curcumenon (24), from methanol extract. Following two years, Boutsada et al [55] isolated pyrocurzerenone (25), dehydrochromolaenin (26), curzeone (27), linderazulene (28), 8,12-epoxy-1(10),4(15), and 7,11-germacratetraen-6-one (29) from dichloromethane extract of this plant's rhizome.…”
