Service Restoration Through Microgrid Formation in Distribution Networks: A Review

Abstract: Microgrid formation is a promising solution to enhance resiliency of distribution networks. The self-adequacy feature of a microgrid enables continuity of power supply through distributed generation (DG) units during severe faults and natural disasters. In this paper, different methods commonly used to partition a distribution network into multiple microgrids are presented, including the graph theory, heuristic rulebased algorithm, cluster-based technique, and mixed integer programming. Advantages and disadvan… Show more

“…The authors of this paper maintain that such an approach can provide additional operational for the large-scale power grid, and can allow it to realize the benefits of variable DERs more effectively. In [49], the possibility of coordinating microgrids is seen as a way to improve the resiliency of distribution network. Methods for quantifying resiliency are discussed in [50] and [51], and a generic framework for analyzing the power system resiliency using NMGs is proposed in [52].…”

“…To address these challenges, most existing studies focus on microgrid reconstruction to enhance the resiliency of the distribution network and its ability to cope with the impact of extreme weather events [5][6][7][8][9]. For instance, study [8] proposed a strategy of running network reconstruction during strong wind events to maximize the network's resiliency while minimizing line-switching operations.…”

“…In [7], a comprehensive literature review is conducted on service restoration through microgrid formation techniques for distribution networks. Planning and service restoration through microgrid formation, virtual power plants, gridforming inverters and smart circuit breakers are some promising solutions for emergency power systems [8]- [10].…”
