Service-based Architecture with Product-centric Control in a Production Island-based Agile Factory

We present work on dynamic adapter connections for IEC 61499. Adapters in IEC 61499 simplify programs by encapsulating different event and data connections. Traditionally the plug and sockets are determined at design time of a system. In contrast, dynamic adapter connections do not statically link subsystems at design time, but allow to exchange interacting subsystems at runtime by retargeting plugs and sockets. This paper presents the dynamic adapter connection concept. In addition, we present an implementation concept based on OPC UA and an example.

Towards Formal Monitoring of Workpieces in Agile Manufacturing

Information about the locations of objects is one of the main ingredients of Industry 4.0. With the increased use of flexible and agile manufacturing techniques, the monitoring of workpieces in a factory can become more challenging. In this paper, we present a state-machine-based approach for monitoring workpieces using sensors such as RFID readers. We present a solution where each object is represented as a deterministic state machine to monitor the object's journey throughout production via this state machine representation. Multiple objects can be monitored at the same time by running parallel event-based state machines. We present an implementation of our solution using RFID-Readers and OPC UA.

Quality control of products plays an important role in various stages of the manufacturing process. In particular the final control of the quality of a product before being shipped to a customer is crucial for maintaining customer satisfaction and avoiding costly recalls. Automating quality inspection and integrating it into a seamless Industry 4.0 setting is therefore an important topic in factory automation. We present early work towards an automated product inspection station. Our inspection station features a 3D scanner as well as a Virtual Reality headset for remote human inspection. In addition, our concept provides for automated analysis of scans in the cloud. We present an architectural concept as well as an early prototype.
