Serum βhCG and Lipid Profile in Early Second Trimester as Predictors of Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension

Abstract: Objectives A variety of biological, biochemical, and biophysical markers implicated in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia during the last two decades have instigated the growing interest in this study to include both bhCG and lipid profile studies in the early second trimester as early predictors of pregnancy-induced hypertension. Early identification of at-risk women may help in taking timely preventive and curative management to prevent or delay complications associated with pregnancy-induced hypertension. … Show more

“…In Yadav et al. 's study of 120 pregnant women, the lipid profile was elevated in hypertensive women as compared with normotensive women ( P< 0.05), but β‐hCG was not, by contrast with the present findings. In a study of β‐hCG, α‐fetoprotein, and inhibin A levels among 50 pregnant women, Dayal et al .…”

“…PIH induces a wide variety of disorders, such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and eclampsia [4]. Early diagnoses, antenatal surveillance, and timely intervention are important for PIH management [5], but currently, no cost-effective, reliable and reproducible screening test is available for PIH. Endothelial dysfunction may be a predisposing factor for obstetric complications, such as preeclampsia and PIH [3].…”

“…Hypertensive pregnant women are at increased risk for later cardiovascular disease and mortality regardless of their proteinuric status . Early diagnosis, close antenatal surveillance, and timely intervention are key to the management of PIH . Currently, there are no reliable, economic, and reproducible screening tests available.…”
