Serum Vitamin E and Risk of Cancer Among Finnish Men During a 10-Year Follow-Up

Abstract: The association between serum alpha-tocopherol levels and the subsequent incidence of cancer was investigated in a longitudinal study of 21,172 men initially aged 15-99 years in six geographic areas in Finland. The baseline examination was conducted in 1968-1972, and during the follow-up of 6-10 years, 453 cancers were diagnosed. The serum alpha-tocopherol levels were measured from stored serum samples from these men and from 841 male controls, matched for municipality and age, who did not develop cancer durin… Show more

“…We have previously described in detail a nested casecontrol study of serum micronutrients and cancer incidence relating to 766 cancer cases and 1558 age-and sex-matched controls derived from the prospective phase of this healthexamination study (Knekt et al, 1988). In the study described here we took all of the subjects who served as controls in the previous cancer study as the initial population from which the cases and controls were drawn.…”

“…We previously investigated the risks of several common chronic diseases and serum concentrations of antioxidants and micronutrients in a large prospective population study (Knekt et al, 1988;Knekt et al, 1992;Reunanen et al, 1992;Helio Èvaara et al, 1994). In this report of a nested casecontrol study we analyse the associations between the incidence of NIDDM and levels of b-carotene, retinol and a-tocopherol.…”

“…Like vitamin C, vitamin E is an intracellular antioxidant and can inhibit nitrosation (Kamat and Lamm, 1999;Knekt et al, 1988;Patterson et al, 1997). Two population based case control studies (Bruemmer et al, 1996;Riboli et al, 1991) and one prospective study (Michaud et al, 2000) reported inverse associations between dietary vitamin E intake and bladder cancer risk.…”

“…The survey included a health interview (including marital status and smoking status), some routine physiological measurements (such as body-mass index) and collection of serum sample (Knekt et al, 1988). A registry linkage of the serum bank with the files of the nationwide Finnish Cancer Registry identified 47 myeloma cases during a follow-up to the end of 1991.…”
