Serum visfatin concentrations are positively correlated with serum triacylglycerols and down-regulated by overfeeding in healthy young men

Abstract: Visfatin is down-regulated by overfeeding. Under physiologic conditions, visfatin does not appear to control glucose metabolism but may play a regulatory role in lipid metabolism.

“…Positive correlation of visfatin and triglycerides, found in our patients with impaired glucose metabolism, was also shown in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes [24] in obese women with metabolic syndrome [26] and in healthy young men [27]. Hypertriglyceridemia is typical for individuals with visceral obesity and insulin resistance.…”

“…We have found a positive association between circulating NAMPT levels and triglycerides, totaland LDL-cholesterol suggesting a role of NAMPT in lipid homeostasis. In line with this observation, a role of NAMPT in lipid metabolism has been put forward due to its strong correlation with serum triglycerides independently of age and BF [47,48] and with total-and LDL-cholesterol [49]. Contrarily, plasma NAMPT levels have been associated with a high HDL-cholesterol/low triglyceride plasma lipid profile [50].…”

“…Subjects were recruited from an overfeeding study investigating the effects of a positive energy balance on endocrine factors and on indicators of glucose and lipid metabolism (19,20,22). A total of 69 young men were recruited from the city of St John's (Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada) and the surrounding areas.…”

“…Our laboratory and others have shown that changes in nutritional status, such as overfeeding, have major effects on adipose tissue metabolism (19,20), circulating concentrations of adipokines (21), and gene expression profiles (22). A positive energy balance may also influence circulating concentrations of gut hormones, such as PYY, and subsequently affect appetite.…”
