Serum total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in lambs following supplementation with various forms of tocopherol

Abstract: Summary ― A 61-d study involving 40 crossbred lambs evaluated the effect of various forms of tocopherol provided daily in equimolar amounts on total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteincholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in the serum of lambs. Thirty-five lambs were allotted to 7 treatment groups of 5 animals each, supplemented with 300 mg tocopherol either as: 1) DL -atocopheryl acetate; 2) D -a-tocopheryl acetate; 3) D- Show more

“…In a sheep study, no observed influence on plasma cholesterol, triglycerides or total lipids following the provision of varying doses of vitamin E for 3 months [41]. Similar findings with regards to lipid and cholesterol plasma profile were reported by Hidiroglou et al [42] in lambs ingesting various forms of vitamin E during a 60-day period. Discrepancies on the effect of vitamin E on plasma lipid profile may be associated to the extent of dosing time with the antioxidant [43] and these investigators [43] suggest that changes in serum lipoprotein profile may occur after receiving the antioxidant nutrient for more than 3 months.…”

“…Hidiroglou et al [40] examined the effects of different tocopherol esters on serum concentrations of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol in 40 wether lambs. The animals were divided into seven treatment groups of five animals each and one placebo group.…”

“…Nonetheless, the observed values were within the normal range reported for sheep (Kaneko et al., ). Additional α ‐tocopherol in T 3 was intended at improving the carcass quality, and thus, it may not influence serum lipid metabolism in this short‐term intervention (Hidiroglou et al., ).…”
