Serum Thyrotrophin and Circulating Thyroglobulin and Thyroid Microsomal Antibodies in a Finnish Population

Abstract: Between 2000 and 2010, Mé decins Sans Frontiè res diagnosed and treated 4,831 patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Pokot region straddling the border between Uganda and Kenya. A retrospective analysis of routinely collected clinical data showed no marked seasonal or annual fluctuations. Males between 5 and 14 years of age were the most affected group. “…The ab sence of nonthyroid autoantibodies (LE cells and adrenal antibodies) is in accordance with this assumption and confirms the con clusions of Hymans et al [30] concerning the selective appearance of autoantibodies in the elderly. Thyroid autoantibodies are known to be more prevalent in older subjects [8,16,24,27] and their presence seems correlated with that of gastric antibodies, as previously observed [2] and suggested by our data.…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6] ΑΤ is the most common cause of thyroid disorder among children and adolescents and has a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and a variable clinical course. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Among Greek children, the prevalence of positive thyroid autoantibodies is estimated to be between 4-10%, the prevalence of goiter 3.2%, the prevalence of thyroid nodules 5.1% and the prevalence of altered thyroid echostructure approximately 9%.…”
