“…Serum Proteins.-The changes found in serum protein patterns after partial hepatectomy and laparotomy are similar to those previously described [de Lamirande and Cantero, 1952;Alivisatos et al, 1960] and may, again, be mainly the effects of trauma. The only specific effect of hepatectomy seemed to occur on the 2nd day after operation, when the a-and :2-globulin concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the laparotomy rats than in the hepatectomy animals.…”

“…A marked increase in TIBC followed both types of operation and also occurred in both forms of anaemia. Whereas the change in TIBC after operation was associated with marked generalized alterations in the serum protein pattern little change in this pattern was found in ana.mia.It is considered likely that the increase in TIBC following the operation represents an alteration in the concentration of the plasma iron binding protein, transferrin, as part of a general change in protein metabolism, while the increase in TIBC in the aneemias is more likely to be a change specific for transferrin and acting as part of the alteration in iron metabolism which occurs in anoemia.PARTIAL hepatectomy is followed by changes in the concentrations of the plasma proteins in the rat [Chanutin, Hortenstine, Cole and Ludewig, 1938; Roberts and White, 1949;de Lamirande and Cantero, 1952; Alivisatos, Stern, Savich and Lukas, 1960] and simple laparotomy may be followed by similar changes [Chanutin et al, 1938; Hoch-Ligiti and Irvine, 1954;Alivisatos et al, 1960]. An increase in the plasma total iron binding capacity (TIBC), reflecting an increase in the concentration of the fl-globulin, transferrin, may also occur after partial hepatectomy [Venkatachalam, Brading, Kaldor and George, 1957].…”

“…It does not seem likely that the cytoplasmic bodies have any function in restoring the level of albumin in the blood, since the number of cytoplasmic bodies begins to decrease as early as 16 hours after partial hepatectomy and since the serum albumin content remains low until at least 5 days (35) after operation. The plasma globulin content, however, begins to rise 24 hours after operation (13,34,35), This increase does coincide with the decrease in number of cytoplasmic bodies observed in regenerating liver. It may be that the cytoplasmic bodies observed during the early hours after partial hepatectomy result from an increased de novo synthesis of plasma globulins by the liver, or an increase in the amount of globulin being exported.…”

“…It has been shown (13,34,35) that, soon after partial hepatectomy, there occurs a decrease in the total plasma protein content of the blood. Most of the proteins which are components of plasma lipoprotein are, under normal conditions, synthesized in the liver (13).…”
