Serum protein electrophoresis patterns in human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals not on antiretroviral treatment

Abstract: We found a remarkably high level (53%) of polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia in our untreated population compared with uninfected controls (10%). Only 4% of the HIV-positive group had a monoclonal band. Polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia correlated significantly with lower CD4+ counts. These results highlight the generalized B cell stimulation in untreated HIV infection. Future longitudinal studies will be important to determine the prognostic value of these findings.

“…There are few articles with monoclonal bands in the gamma region in cases with malignancy and retroviral infections. [13,14] In nephropathy, in our study, the mean value was noted as 6.53 ± 0.96 which is on the lower side of the normal and was similar to the study done by Journal of Medical Sciences and Health/Jan-Apr 2016/Volume 2/Issue 1…”

“…Autoimmune phenomena arise from various pathogenetic mechanisms, including molecular mimicry, dysregulation of the interaction between B and T lymphocytes, as well as relentless immunoactivation due to lifelong infection with HIV (7)(8)(9). In the sera of HIV-infected patients various autoantibodies, e.g.…”
