Serum pneumoproteins and biomarkers of exposure to urban air pollution: a cross-sectional comparison of policemen and foresters

Abstract: Very few biomarkers are available for the non-invasive detection of effects of urban air pollution on the respiratory tract. The objective was to evaluate whether Clara cell protein (CC16) and surfactant-associated protein-A (SP-A), two pulmonary secretory proteins, were useful in the detection of effects of urban air pollutants on the pulmonary epithelium. These proteins were determined in the serum of 53 policemen working in Brussels, Belgium, and a control group of 59 foresters working in the countryside. E… Show more

“…The prevalence of previous history of kidney disease was similar in all groups and no correlation between serum creatinine and SPA concentration was found, a finding in line with the results of Hermans et al (2003). Air pollution was reported not to increase SPA (Berthoin et al, 2004). A bias due to nonparticipation is unlikely too, because it would have required an association between nonparticipation and SPA concentration.…”

“…SP-D levels were likewise reportedly low in lavage fluid of smokers (Honda et al, 1996;Betsuyaku et al, 2004). In contrast, a significant increase of SP-A and SP-D in smokers is observed in the circulation (Robin et al, 2002;Hermans et al, 2003;Berthoin et al, 2004;Behera et al, 2005;Mutti et al, 2006;Sorensen et al, 2006a). Despite the high degree of variability in the circulation, SP-A was likewise recently suggested to function as a serum marker of increasing epithelial leakage in tobacco smokers (Robin et al, 2002).…”

“…В исследованиях выявлено, что у курильщиков значительно увеличены уровни SP-А и SP-D в общем кровотоке [45][46][47][48], а у больных ХОБЛ наблюдалась четкая обратная зависимость между тяжестью заболевания и уровнем SP-D в сыворотке, тогда как для белка 16 клеток Клара или С-реактивного белка такой зависимо-сти не наблюдалось [49].…”
