Serum pentraxin 3 concentration in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Abstract: INTRODUCTION Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is common in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Pentraxin 3 (PTX3), a marker of inflammation, is a cardiovascular risk factor. OBJECTIVES We examined clinical and biochemical factors associated with serum PTX3 concentrations in patients with T2D with and without NAFLD. PATIENTS AND METHODS Serum material was obtained from 116 patients with T2D (mean age, 59.1 years), including 79 patients with NAFLD. RESULTS Median (interquartile range) PTX3 level was 4.2… Show more

“…A further study described a positive association of PTX3 mRNA expression in white blood cells with low-density lipoprotein [13,14]. Accordingly, serum PTX3 was positively correlated with LDL-cholesterol in a cohort of type 2 diabetes patients [15]. Notably, type 2 diabetes patients with NAFLD had serum PTX3 levels as high as patients with normal liver function illustrating an association of serum PTX3 with dyslipidemia rather than NAFLD [13,15].…”

Notably, type 2 diabetes patients with NAFLD had serum PTX3 levels as high as patients with normal liver function illustrating an association of serum PTX3 with dyslipidemia rather than NAFLD [13,15]. Anyhow, a separate study described an association of plasma PTX3 with the stages of liver fibrosis in patients with NAFLD [16].…”

“…Interestingly, in our cohort of DM2 patients, we found significant associations between PTX3 and atherogenic lipids and Apo B100 and Apo C3 levels in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, further supporting PTX3 as marker of increased vascular risk. 30…”

“…The surge in pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukins (IL), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)-1 along with the decline in anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-7, IL-10, and adiponectin) enhances the effect of lingering inflammation [8,9,12]. The evidence of chronic injury and resultant inflammation is supported by the presence of acute-phase reactant pentraxin and high sensitivity c-reactive protein (hs-CRP) emerging as an important marker of liver fibrosis and steatohepatitis further confirming the responsibility for continued irritation [14].…”

“…It has a dual role in the inflammatory pathway. It counteracts IL-1, TNFα, infectious agents induced inflammatory route but, on the other hand, it has strong connections with apolipoprotein (Apo)-C3, Apo-B100, which serves as a marker for atherogenic hepatic lipoproteins like very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and sdLDL small density LDL (sdLDL) which are involved in direct systemic inflammation [14].…”
