Serum Paraoxonase/Arylesterase Activity Affects Outcome in Ischemic Stroke Patients

Abstract: Background: The severity of neurological deficits arising from ischemic stroke may be related to serum redox homeostasis. The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of serum paraoxonase (PON), arylesterase (ARE) activities and conjugated dienes (CD) on patient outcome during a 1-year follow-up period. Methods: The study included 468 consecutive ischemic stroke patients (251 males, 217 females) with an average age of 67.5 ± 12.4 years. Clinical evaluation was based on vital signs, National Institutes of H… Show more

“…67 In 2011, Michalak et al studied the association of PON1 triesterase ( paraoxon) and arylesterase activities and conjugated dienes on stroke patient outcome during a 1-year follow-up period. 68 They concluded that the PON/aryl ratio is a significant predictor of ischemic stroke outcome and could be used in the clinical setting to better advantage than the paraoxon or aryl assays alone. These findings have been confirmed by recently Sand.…”

“…Ferretti et al observed that disturbed PON activity was associated with severe neurological deficit [31]. In our previous study we have found the effects of impaired PON and ARE activities on ischemic stroke outcome during short- and long-term observation [16]. Moreover, we have identified the predictive value of PON to ARE ratio [16].…”

“…31 Michalak et al emphasized the importance and usefulness of PON/ARE ratio in predicting risk of ischemic stroke in their study. 32 Therefore, we also tried to compare PON/ARE ratio between groups but we could not have determined a correlation between CIMT and PON/ ARE ratio. Also in our study, CIMT was significantly different only between CKD patients and healthy subjects.…”
