Background This study aimed to investigate the correlation of long non‐coding RNA antisense non‐coding RNA in the INK4 locus (lncRNA ANRIL) and its target microRNAs (microRNA‐34a (miR‐34a) and microRNA‐125a (miR‐125a)) with disease risk and severity of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Methods Seventy‐eight PD patients and 78 age‐/gender‐matched controls were consecutively enrolled. Their peripheral blood mononuclear cell samples were collected and proposed for the reverse‐transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction to complete lncRNA ANRIL, miR‐34a, and miR‐125a measurements. Results LncRNA ANRIL was upregulated, while miR‐34a and miR‐125a were downregulated in PD patients compared to controls (all p < 0.001). Further, they all showed certain values for PD risk identification by ROC curve analyses, among which lncRNA ANRIL showed the highest AUC (AUC: 0.879, 95% CI: 0.824‐0.934). Furthermore, lncRNA ANRIL negatively correlated with miR‐34a (p = 0.016) and miR‐125a (p = 0.005) in PD patients, but not in controls. In addition, lncRNA ANRIL was observed to positively associate with UPDRS‐I score (p = 0.029), UPDRS‐III score (p = 0.006), and UPDRS‐IV score (p = 0.033), while negatively correlated with MMSE score (p = 0.003). These associations were less distinct as to miR‐34a and miR‐125a. Conclusion LncRNA ANRIL interacts with miR‐34a and miR‐125a in PD patients, and they all correlate with disease risk and severity of PD.

Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of short non‐coding RNAs with a length of approximate 22 nuclei acids that can be expressed both as an oncogene and tumor suppressor gene in human cancers. MiRNAs can participate in the post‐ transcriptional regulation of gene expression, and regulate the several cancer‐related processes, including proliferation, apoptosis, metastasis, etc. Recent findings Expression of miRNA‐433 has been reported to vary in different tumors and affected by various factors. We have summarized the different previous studies and found that miRNA‐433 can significantly inhibit the growth of the cancer cells not only in malignant tumors of the digestive tract, but also in lung cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, bladder cancer, renal carcinoma, glioma, retinoblastoma and osteosarcoma. Conclusion When the expression of miRNA‐433 was up‐regulated, the proliferation, metastasis and invasion abilities of the malignant tumor cells were significantly inhibited. At the same time, the potential mechanisms through which miRNA‐433 can suppress the growth and metastasis of the cancer cells were found to be basically the same, and involved modulation of the specific signaling pathways or target genes in the malignant tumors. Overall, it can be concluded that miRNA‐433 can serve as potential and valuable therapeutic target.

This paper presents diagnostic criteria for vascular vertigo and dizziness as formulated by the Committee for the Classification of Vestibular Disorders of the Bárány Society. The classification includes vertigo/dizziness due to stroke or transient ischemic attack as well as isolated labyrinthine infarction/hemorrhage, and vertebral artery compression and subclavian steal syndromes. Vertigo and dizziness are among the most common symptoms of posterior circulation strokes. Vascular vertigo/dizziness may be acute and prolonged (≥24 hours) or transient (minutes to < 24 hours). Vascular vertigo/dizziness should be considered in patients who present with acute vestibular symptoms and additional central neurological symptoms and signs, including central HINTS signs (normal head-impulse test, direction-changing gaze-evoked nystagmus, or pronounced skew deviation), particularly in the presence of vascular risk factors. Isolated labyrinthine infarction does not have a confirmatory test, but should be considered in individuals at increased risk of stroke and can be presumed in cases of acute unilateral vestibular loss if accompanied or followed within 30 days by an ischemic stroke in the anterior inferior cerebellar artery territory. For diagnosis of vertebral artery compression and subclavian steal syndromes, typical symptoms and signs in combination with imaging or sonographic documentation of vascular compromise are required.
