Serum miR-152, miR-148a, miR-148b, and miR-21 as novel biomarkers in non-small cell lung cancer screening

Abstract: Lung cancer, predominantly by non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths over the world. Late diagnosis is one of important reasons for high mortality rate in lung cancer. Current diagnostic approaches have disadvantages such as low accuracy, high cost, invasive procedure, etc. MicroRNAs were previously proposed as promising novel biomarkers in cancer screening. In this study, we evaluated the predictive power of four candidate miRNAs in NSCLC detection. Our study involve… Show more

“…MiRNAs have been well defined as a regular for tumorigenesis [29,30,31,32,33,34,35]. Among all miRNAs, miR-21 was recently reported as an aberrantly expressed miRNA in NSCLC [36,37,38,39,40], but the alteration of miR-21 during the Carboplatin treatment is not well defined.…”

“…Some studies reported that plasma tumor markers with high concentrations are often found only when the disease is at an late stage (16)(17)(18)(19). Therefore, it is difficult to detect a lung tumor clinically at an early stage with plasma marker assays (20,21).…”

“…Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that miR-148b expression is reduced in the plasma samples of patients with NSCLC (23). In addition, miR-148b is a potential prognostic biomarker and predictor of the response to radiotherapy in patients with NSCLC (9,24,29). However, the mechanism by which miR-148b regulates the proliferation and radiosensitivity of NSCLC cells remains unclear.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that miR-148b levels are reduced in plasma samples taken from patients with NSCLC (23). Furthermore, it has been proposed that miR-148b may be a novel biomarker in NSCLC (9,24). However, the molecular mechanism underlying the role of miR-148b in NSCLC remains unclear.…”
