Background Artificial turf fields are widely used as an alternative to natural grass in many areas such as parks, playgrounds, and playing fields. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the toxicological effects of the chemicals contained in the fields consisting of artificial turf and crumb rubber on the blood metal levels in field hockey players. MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted involving 28 apparently healthy men aged 20-25 years who participated in this study voluntarily. They consisted of 17 field hockey athletes [athlete group (AG)] and 11 sedentary males [control group (CG)]. Before and after the 7-day tournament, blood samples were taken from AG and CG to measure mercury, arsenic, aluminum, lead, zinc, magnesium and iron levels. An independent t-test was used to analyze the data. ResultsIn comparisons between CG and AG, the magnesium level of AG before the tournament was higher, while the iron and mercury levels were significantly lower (p<0.05). In intragroup comparisons, a significant increase was observed in the post-tournament magnesium and iron variables in the AG group (p<0.05). In post-tournament intergroup comparisons, increases in the Mg and decreases in the Hg variables of AG were significant (p<0.05). ConclusionIt is thought that as a result of the tournament on fields with synthetic grass surfaces, the male field hockey players in the 20-25 age group were toxicologically not affected by the harmful heavy metals present in these fields, because the Hg, As, Pb, Zn, Al, Fe, and Mg levels are within the international reference ranges.

Background & objective: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy including preeclampsia can be associated with preterm birth and infant mortality and morbidity. It seems that intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm neonates born to hypertensive mothers is less common compared to the other ones. In this study, we assessed the relationship between hypertensive disorders of pregnant mothers and the incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm neonates weighing less than 1500 grams. Methods: In this case-control study, 305 singleton preterm neonates with a birth weight less than 1500 g were entered. The presence of IVH in all preterm neonates was assessed using brain ultrasonography and its correlation to hypertensive disorders of their mothers were evaluated.Results: The prevalence of preeclampsia in mothers with and without prepregnancy hypertension was 40%, and 15.09% respectively. The prevalence of IVH in preterm neonates was 26.9% (n=82). The incidence of IVH in preterm neonates of mothers with and without preeclampsia was 16.07%, and 29.31% in (p=0.028), respectively. The prevalence of IVH in preterm neonates of mothers with hypertension and without hypertension was 12.5% and 29.05%, respectively (p=0.018). Preterm neonates with IVH had a lower mean birth weight, smaller gestational age and lower Apgar scores compared to preterm neonates without IVH with p values of <0.001, <0.001 and <0.01, respectively.Conclusion: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy increases the risk of preterm delivery, but incidence of IVH in preterm neonates weighing less than 1500 gr is lower in infants born to mothers with hypertension including preeclampsia compared to non hypertensive mothers. And also lower gestational age, birth weight, and Apgar scores were important predicting factors for IVH in preterm neonates.

Окремі автори робили спробу пов'язати гіпомагніємію з гіпербілірубінемією, але не було виявлено ані позитивної, ані негативної значущої кореляції між рівнем магнію та білірубіну [8], а в нашому дослідженні ми не виявили жодних значущих кореляцій гіпомагніємії з маркерами ендотеліальної дисфункції (варіантами гена eNOS, рівнем оксиду азоту) та наявними клінічними симптомами і тяжкістю перебігу. Натомість нами була встановлена позитивна кореляція між рівнем оксиду азоту та ступенем дихальної недостатності.…”

Optimal magnesium supply during pregnancy and overcoming magnesium deficiency is essential due to its physiological role in many metabolic processes. Metabolic transformations with magnesium are necessary for the vitamin D activation, energy supply for homocysteine restoration, and regulation of nitric oxide synthesis. Magnesium deficiency increases the risk of premature birth, and the diffusion of magnesium to the fetus increases precisely from the second trimester of pregnancy, therefore, its deficiency can adversely affect neonatal adaptation. The aim of this work was to investigate the relationship between the serum magnesium level and markers of endothelial dysfunction and the clinical features of the early neonatal period course. Results. The average level of serum magnesium in 58 premature birth neonates was 1.21 ± 1.09 mg/dl on the first day. A borderline low level of serum magnesium (less than 1.2 mg/dl) was found in 72.41% of the examined children. Statistical analysis did not reveal a relationship between the serum magnesium level on the first day after birth and the studied markers of endothelial dysfunction (eNOS gene variants, nitric oxide level). A positive correlation was found between serum magnesium level and Apgar scores in newborns. For nitric oxide, a negative correlation with the Apgar 2 score and a positive correlation with the degree of respiratory failure were found. Serum magnesium and nitric oxide levels in premature birth neonates measured on the first day after birth enable to assess the course of the antenatal period and to predict postpartum adaptation.
