Serum lipoproteins during chemical carcinogenesis

Abstract: 1. The serum-protein and -lipoprotein patterns of rats, given a purified diet containing 0%, 0.005% or 0.03% 2-acetamidofluorene, have been determined by disk electrophoresis. 2. An abnormal high-density lipoprotein was detected from the first week of the experiment in the serum of the animals given the carcinogen. The low-density lipoproteins also increased on prolonged feeding with the carcinogen.

“…The present results have demonstrated that the slow-moving HDL component (band 2a, Fig. 1) observed previously (Narayan, 1967) in the serum of rats fed N-2-fluorenylacetamide was present to a significant extent in the serum of rats bearing Morris hepatoma 7777. This hepatoma was originally induced by N-2-fluorenylphthalamic acid.…”

“…In the 2nd, 4th and 5th weeks after injection of the tumor, four rats from each group were killed and the blood was collected from the abdominal aorta. The serum lipoprotein patterns were obtained for each individual rat according to methods described before (Narayan, 1967;Narayan et al, 1966a). The total serum protein patterns were obtained by means of 3.75 % polyacrylamide concentration as described earlier (Narayan, 1967).…”

“…Sixty male weanling rats weighing about 0g each (Holtzman Co., Madison, Wis., U.S.A.) were divided into two equal groups. One group was fed on a 10%-corn-oil diet and the other on a 10%corn-oil diet containing 30mg of N-fluoren-2-ylacetamide/lOOg for 27 weeks (Narayan, 1967). The animals were starved for 10h and then given an intraperitoneal injection of 2.5,Ci of L-[U-14C]leucine (210mCi/mmol; International Chemical and Nuclear Corp., Irvine, Calif., U.S.A.)/100g body wt.…”
