Serum Lipid Profile in Colorectal Cancer Patients with and without Synchronous Distant Metastases

Abstract: Objective: In this study, the serum lipid profile, including total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), has been investigated in colorectal cancer patients (CRC) with and without synchronous distant metastases. The aim of this study was to verify whether the presence of metastases was associated to serum lipid abnormalities, and whether lipoprotein abnormalities were linked to the nutritional status. Methods: The fasting serum lipid profile… Show more

“…Studies to determine which metabolic disorder or combination of disorders in obese people increases their cancer risk have been inconclusive (3). Hypercholesterolemia, a common metabolic disorder in obese people, has been shown to increase cancer risk and substantial epidemiologic evidence links hypercholesterolemia to an increased risk of colorectal cancer (4). It was originally proposed that hypercholesterolemia exerts a systemic, conditional influence that affects immu-nosurveillance against colorectal cancer.…”

“…The fasting lipid profiles of Italian men and women with metastatic CRC (n = 22) had higher synchronous total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and LDL/HDL ratios compared to those without metastases (n = 62) (P = 0.03, 0.01, and 0.002, respectively) (Notarnicola, Altomare et al 2005). These results were independent of BMI.…”

“…Number of CRC patients, number of deaths due to CRC and to any cause, actuarial 5-year CRC-specific and relative survival probabilities, by TNM stages, type 2 diabetes mellitus status, and metformin and acetylsalicylic acid use. was associated to higher levels of LDL cholesterol over HDL cholesterol ratio, irrespective of sex and BMI (31). Additionally, the relationship between Serum Amyloid A and HDL particles can explain the inverse relationship between HDL cholesterol levels and cancer (32).…”
