Serum levels of interleukins, growth factors and angiogenin in patients with endometrial cancer

Abstract: The purpose of this work was to study changes in serum levels of interleukins, growth factors and angiogenin during different stages of endometrial cancer progression. Serum levels were assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay in 59 women with stages I-IV of endometrial cancer (study subjects: stage I, n = 20; stage II, n = 8; stage III, n = 5; stage IV, n = 6) and compared to the serum levels in 20 women without cancer as control subjects. Patients with endometrial cancer had varied serum levels of interl… Show more

“…48 The current findings indicate that only a trace of TNF-␣ is present in atypical hyperplasia and Grade I carcinoma and that in high-grade carcinomas there is none. It has been suggested that TNF-␣ plays a role in tumor regression, 49 and in light of the current results it is possible that the rise in serum TNF-␣ concentrations might be secondary and represent increased production from another location, such as lymphocytes.…”

“…Both the results of such studies in patients with malignant epithelial tumors at various organ sites 20,22,47,48 as well as the results of our preliminary studies on a broad ranges of tumors of both epithelial and mesenchymal origin 41 indicate, that these spectra are quite similar in various nonlymphoid malignancies. It may be noted that most of these cytokines as well as their soluble receptors (among them IL-6, IL-8, M-CSF, VEGF, sIL-2R␣, TNF receptors), are involved in normal and pathological wound healing and repair of tissue damage.…”

“…Elevated levels of CA 125, CA 19-9, IL-6, TGFα, MMP-7, SCC [7,[20][21][22][23] and decreased expression of VEGF, AFP, adiponectin, [24][25][26] in endometrial cancer have been previously reported. Although endometrial cancer group has a significantly higher CA 125 as compared with control group, in both groups, CA 125 is below the cut-off clinically defined for ovarian cancer.…”
