Serum levels of interleukin‐8, tumor necrosis factor‐α and γ‐interferon in Egyptian psoriatic patients and correlation with disease severity

Abstract: Psoriatic plaques have been shown to contain increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Also, serum levels of several cytokines have been reported elevated in psoriatic patients. It is postulated that changes in cytokine production both locally and systemically could be useful in monitoring disease activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum cytokine profile of interleukin (IL)-8, γ-interferon (IFN-γ) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in Egyptian psoriatic patients by enzyme-linked immunosorbe… Show more

“…Although one of the limitations of the current study is the lack of data regarding plasma proinflammatory cytokine levels of the study subjects, the role of cytokines has been extensively studied in patients with psoriasis. Serum TNF-α and IFN-γ levels were significantly higher in patients with active psoriasis and these high serum levels were positively correlated with the clinical severity and activity of the disease 19 , 20 . The serum levels of these cytokines were reported to serve as a follow-up marker for monitoring disease severity 19 , 20 .…”

“…Our study detected no significant correlations between the PASI and the TNF- α serum levels. There are papers confirming no correlation between TNF- α and PASI [ 28 , 29 , 37 ], and others stating the opposite [ 32 , 34 ]. This controversy may be due to the heterogeneity of the inclusion criteria and study populations ( Table 5 ).…”

“…Psoriasis is associated with a systemic immunodysregulation characterized by high expression of pro-infiammatory cytokines, but T-cell hypo-responsiveness, including decreased IFN-y production (12,(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Among them, TNF plays an early and key role in the pro-infiarnmatory cascade.…”
