Serum levels of interleukin 6 in patients with lung cancer

Abstract: Japan. SinarySerum interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were measured in 75 patients with lung cancer and in 20 patients with benign lung diseases. IL-6 was detectable in 29 patients with lung cancer (39%), but was not detectable in any of the patients with benign lung diseases. Serum C-reactive protein levels and plasma fibrinogen levels were significantly higher and serum albumin concentration was significantly lower in lung cancer patients with detectable serum IL-6 levels than in those without detectable serum IL-6… Show more

“…Indeed, there is evidence that proinflammatory cytokines are produced locally by tumours in patients with NSCLC (Arias-Diaz et al, 1994). In particular, interleukin-6 is recognised as a primary mediator of increased C-reactive protein concentrations in these patients (Yanagawa et al, 1995;Scott et al, 1996). However, whether interleukin-6 is produced directly by lung cancer cells remains unclear.…”

“…There is some evidence that proinflammatory cytokines, especially IL-6, act as endogenous pyogens (Gauldie et al, 1987;Castel et al, 1990) and mediate experimental cachexia from cancer (Strassmann et al, 1992). IL-6 affects systemic nutrition and metabolism and is responsible for many of the clinically observed nutritional effects of injury, infection and cancer (Souba, 1994;Yanagawa et al, 1995;Oka et al, 1996). As a significant correlation was found between the serum concentration of HGF and IL-6 in the present study, our findings suggest that serum HGF may be a possible index that reflects tumour-induced malnutrition developed in the patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma.…”

“…Indeed, in humans interleukin 6 appears to be a primary regulator of the acute phase response (Heinrich et al, 1990). Furthermore, reports have documented an increase in circulating interleukin 6 concentrations in gastrointestinal cancer (Fearon et al, 1991;Falconer et al, 1994b) and lung cancer patients (Yanagawa et al, 1995).…”
