Serum Isomerase in Leukemia

Abstract: Bodansky (1954a) recently described a method for the determination of serum isomnerase and examined the extent to which the serum enzyme activity can be correlated with clinical and biochemical evidence of tumour growth. He found good correlation in breast and prostatic cancer (Bodansky, 1954b(Bodansky, , 1955.In view of the considerable isomerase activity shown by erythrocytes and leukocytes, we have determined the serum isomerase concentrationi in diseases involving the cellular elements of the blood. “…Our results in the present study demonstrate that serum PHI levels were increased by more than 100 per cent in patients with head and neck cancer (Table I). Serum PHI levels have been shown to be raised by nearly l-to-18 fold in various types of cancer (Israels and Delory, 1956;Schwartz et al, 1962a, b;Griffith and Beck, 1963;Damle et al, 1971). The rise, however, was less in cancer of the head and neck region, as compared to that of the breast, prostate or liver.…”

“…The serum activity is greatly increased in acute hepatitis (Bruns and Jacob, 1954;Bruns, 1957;Bing et al, 1957;Bodansky, Krugman, Ward, Schwartz, Giles, and Jacobs, 1959). Israels and Delory (1956), Israels, Delory, Hnatiuk, and Friesen (1958) and Blanchaer, Green, MacLean, and Hollenberg (1958) found raised activity in myelocytic leukaemia but not in the leucocytosis of infection or in lymphocytic leukaemia. Bodansky, Gershten, and Wilson (1954) and Myers and Bodansky (1957) reported the assay to be useful in following progress during palliative treatment for metastatic carcinoma of the breast and also of the prostate (Bodansky, Calitri, and Wilson, 1955).…”
