Serum heat shock protein 27 levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: Levels of serum heat shock protein 27 (sHsp27) have been studied in numerous cancer types, but their potential relevance in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is undetermined. Our aim was to compare sHsp27 levels in patients with HCC and HCC-free controls. Specifically, we recruited 71 patients with HCC (80 % with early tumour), 80 patients with chronic liver disease (59 with liver cirrhosis and 21 with chronic active hepatitis) and 42 healthy subjects. sHsp27 was measured by immunoenzymatic assay. R… Show more

“…Likewise, the HCC biomarker cystatin C, an inhibitor of cystein proteinases, showed significantly higher levels also in sera from lung cancer patients [132], and the HCC and lung cancer putative biomarker alpha-1 acid glycoprotein 1, an acute phase protein, was found as well elevated in sera and tumor tissues from patients affected by gastric carcinoma [133]. The here described liver cancer biomarker heat shock protein 27, a protein with cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic activity, measured by immunoenzymatic assay, was confirmed to be elevated in an independent cohort of sera from HCC patients [134]. …”

“…Augmentation of Hsp27 level has been observed both in serum [61] and liver tumor tissue [62,63] from patients with HCC and also in tumor and bile from patients with CCA [64]. Increased MK2 and Hsp27 expression in liver cancer tissues may be linked to a higher activity of MK2/Hsp27 signaling pathway.…”
