Serum Fibrin/Fibrinogen Degradation Products Associated with Postoperative Pulmonary Embolus and Venous Thrombosis

Abstract: Clonidine in Treatment of Hypertension-Amery et al. BRITMIS 395 al. (1969) mentioned that a dose of 0.4 to 1.2 g. of clonidine is equivalent to 1.5 to 2.0 g. of methyldopa. These data and our present findings agree on the following points: that 0-7 mg. of clonidine corresponds to about 1 g. of methyldopa, that blood-pressure control can be achieved at least as well with clonidine as with methyldopa, and that side effects are more frequent during clonidine than during methyldopa treatment. The present stu… Show more

“…The most common cause in our patients appears to have been vascular disease. If FDP in CSF behave as in serum (Ruckley et al, 1970), they should be cleared within a few days. The only evidence on this point is furnished by the patient with persistent excitement after subarachnoid haemorrhage: he showed FDP in the CSF initially but none were found on retesting four weeks later when his CSF protein had also fallen to normal.…”

To our knowledge, the presence of FDP in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has not been reported before.…”

“…Cleavage fragments expressing these neoantigens are not present in the plasma of healthy adults at concentrations greater than 20 nM (15)(16)(17). In a number of pathological conditions leading to the activation of plasminogen, cleavage fragments are generated (18)(19)(20)(21)(22), and physical exercise (23) as well as forms of stress (24) mav also lead to increased levels of cleavage fragments. Because of the potential pathophysiologic manifestations of immune responses to the derivatives of fibrinogen and fibrin, we have examined the endogenous immune responses of normal individuals to tlle plasmin cleavage fragments of fibrinogen and fibrin.…”

“…The gold standard for the diagno sis of DVT, contrast venography [5], is an invasive, often painful and expensive tech nique that requires special expertise [6], Therefore several noninvasive alternatives have been developed, of which impedance plethysmography (IPG) [7][8][9][10], ultrasonog raphy [11,12] and l25I-fibrinogen leg scan ning [13] have extensively been evaluated. IPG has shown to be a practical noninvasive alternative for the diagnosis of proximal DVT of the leg in outpatients [8][9][10], In the past, laboratory assays have also been inves tigated to establish their potential role in the diagnosis of DVT [14][15][16][17][18][19][20], Most of these assays were based upon the idea that the presence of products in the circulation, re sulting from plasmin-mediated lysis of fibrin(ogen), might be a useful marker of the thrombotic event. Because these assays em ployed polyclonal antibodies which crossreact with fibrinogen, their use is limited to serum samples.…”
