Serum cytokeratin 19 fragment 21‐1 is a useful tumor marker for the assessment of extramammary Paget's disease

Abstract: Cytokeratin 19 fragment 21-1 (CYFRA 21-1) has been used as a tumor marker for several malignancies. However, to date, no studies have assessed whether CYFRA 21-1 could be a useful marker for extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD). The present study aimed to evaluate the significance of CYFRA 21-1 as a serum tumor marker for EMPD progression. Concentrations of serum CYFRA 21-1 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in 13 cases of EMPD were measured prior to undergoing treatment at Sapporo Medical University Hospital f… Show more

“…a). In particular, the elevated serum cfDNA levels in patients with localized EMPD are clinically important, because serum CYFRA and CEA levels were not increased in most patients with localized EMPD . In a confirmatory experiment, serum CYFRA levels in patients with localized EMPD were not elevated compared with those in healthy individuals, although the levels in patients with advanced EMPD were higher than those in both healthy individuals and patients with localized EMPD.…”

“…Extramammary Paget disease (EMPD) is generally characterized by a malignant skin tumour with good prognosis; however, the prognosis of metastatic EMPD is poor. Tumour markers of EMPD have been reported to be carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA), although serum CEA and CYFRA levels are not elevated in most patients with EMPD without metastasis. Therefore, further useful biomarkers are needed for the detection of EMPD, including early lesions, and for the evaluation of therapeutic efficacy.…”
