Serum Cholesterol Levels in Neutropenic Patients with Fever

Abstract: Hypocholesterolemia, which often accompanies infectious diseases has been suggested to serve as a prognostic marker in hospitalized patients. Even though patients with chemotherapy-induced leukopenia are at high risk of infection and mortality, only limited information is available on serum cholesterol levels in these patients. We therefore measured serum cholesterol levels in 17 patients with hematological malignancies during chemotherapy-induced neutropenia and correlated it with clinical outcome. Patients w… Show more

“…Several studies showed that the reduction in cholesterol levels and the alterations in apolipoprotein concentrations were correlated with certain cytokine and acute phase protein levels. Indeed, such correlations were demonstrated in patients with sepsis ( 44 ), in neutropenic patients with fever ( 45 ), and in normal volunteers after a single intravenous endotoxin injection ( 46 ). Moreover, similar associations were noticed in patients with AIDS ( 47 ) and in critically ill surgical patients ( 48 ).…”

“…Allocholic acid and 3-hydroxychola-7, 22-dien-24-oic acid, both of which was in the plasma of pyrexia rats, belong to bile acids and their derivatives that are the metabolites of cholesterol. Previous reports have documented that neutropenic patients with fever showed a significant decrement for the level of serum cholesterol [48], indicating that the decrease bile acids in pyrexia rats might be related to the cholesterol decrease.…”

“…Previous studies by us and others have shown that lipids are altered in patients with various infections. The majority of studies in humans included patients with sepsis [2,25,26]. Other infections were also investigated [1].…”
