Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in Scyliorhinus canicula (L.) during sexual maturation

Abstract: A study was carried out on the serum levels of cholesterol [total (TC) and that associated with high-density lipoproteins (HDLC)] and triglyceride (TG) in 127 specimens of Scyliorhinus cariiculu. The values obtained were correlated with sex, size, liver weight and reproductive stage. Results showed that male dogfish have higher levels of TC and HDLC, and lower TG than female. In adult males, TC increased and HDLC decreased with both size and spermatogenesis. Females carrying capsulated eggs showed a noticeable … Show more

“…Detailed comparisons of the lipid concentrations between sexes and reproductive stages have been published elsewhere. 26 Correlation coefficients showed no significant statistical relation between these parameters and both incidence and lesion severity indexes ( Table 2).…”

“…Although NEFAs were significantly lower (by 84%) in the plasma of food-deprived cod, a result that is in agreement with the findings of Black and Love (1986), this reduction in plasma NEFAs in fooddeprived cod may not reflect a lack of lipid mobilization. Black and Love (1986) and Garcia-Garrido et al (1990) indicated that NEFAs tend to fall with food deprivation in species where the liver is the major storage for lipids (e.g., cod) because TAG is already in the liver, and the breakdown products of TAG need not enter the circulatory system as NEFAs. However, the implications go well beyond aspects related to TAG mobilization from the liver.…”

“…Both results can be related to reproduction. The liver of mature females produces vitellogenin, the precursor of yolk, during oocyte maturation (García-Garrido et al, 1990;Henningsen, 1999). In addition, some liver lipids are used in yolk anabolism (Rossouw, 1987;García-Garrido et al, 1990).…”

In addition, some liver lipids are used in yolk anabolism (Rossouw, 1987;García-Garrido et al, 1990). These facts may help to explain the occurrence of larger livers in mature females than in males and immature females as an adaptation to maximize yolk formation.…”
